Martinez worked with April Fuchs at an Infiniti dealership in Ramsey for the last three years. She saw Fuchs and her partner Blaire wait a long time to have a child as they endured legislation on same-sex marriages and then health problems to prevent it further.

Martinez decided to start a fundraiser to help them with the medical bills and fertility tests so they could expand their family.

"I have a 9-year-old and it's saved my life in more ways than one," Martinez told Daily Voice. "It gives you a sense of purpose. I know to be able to give that to someone else ... it just means the world."

April Fuchs struggled with diabetes and fertility issues, so Blaire decided to carry their potential child. She started hormone shots but Martinez said the medical bills started to add up, leading her to start the fundraiser.

Blaire and April have been together for more than a decade but could only recently make their union official.

Blaire said they were really moved by Martinez's help.

"She's obviously really open to people of all different lifestyles," she said of Martinez. "I think it spoke about her character and heart, and her willingness to put herself out there."

Martinez, who moved to Lodi two years ago, said she knows her friends are ready to become parents.

"You can see just the joy in [April's] eyes when we talk about the milestones our kids have at work," Martinez said. "She's going to be such a good mom."
